As of the moment, there are probably a hundred thousand insults, judgments and ridicule posted in cyberspace against Lao's actions, including 7 of my tweets, 2 of my FB status changes and an online conversation with an acquaintance (who was apparently Lao's friend).
Christopher Lao, a former UP law student, woke up this morning only to find out that he is now a local internet sensation that would rival the fame of Charice Pempengco. In fact, he became the 8th trending topic on Twitter, worldwide. No, it's not because he has an astonishing singing voice but because he exhibited uncanny stupidity and misplaced arrogance on camera.
WHAT HAPPENED
Lao's sudden rise to fame began when he decided to cross the deep section of the flooded Mother Ignacia Avenue. It just so happens that a GMA7 news crew was there to get every detail on newscam and ending it with an interview when Lao finally crosses the flood water (with help from bystanders who pushed his car).
JUN VENERACION (GMA): "Di mo ba narealize na ganun siya kalalim?"
CHRISTOPHER LAO: "Wala, kasi tignan mo, who will tell me? Who will tell me? Really. Did you guys even tell me?"JUN VENERACION (GMA): "
He blamed the government for not having street signages, warnings and traffic personnel. He blamed the news crew for not helping him out when he and his car was floating in the middle of the flood. He blamed the bystanders for not warning him that the floodwater is deep. If he could blame his parents for not giving him an amphibious car, I bet he would. He blamed everyone except himself.
WHAT MAY HAVE HAPPENED AFTER
Against all that is logical (in driving and in life in general), Lao decided to challenge the deep flood waters because he had his car waxed early this morning. The wax says: Water Resistant. He was misinformed. Unfortunately, he failed to include in his blame list the manufacturer of his car wax.
"Sinigaw pa nga namin sa kanya na wag siyang tanga kasi malalim, pero nilusong pa din niya yung baha." - according to the bystanders who saw Lao drive his car through flood waters.
In a follow-up interview, Lao said that he also blames Batman.
GMA News maintains that they are in no way responsible for the cyber-bullying against Lao. GMA News blames Lao's common sense for being absent when needed the most.
After Sen. Miguel Zubiri reiterated he was not in anyway involved in the alleged 2007 poll fraud, Atty. Koko Pimentel reacted: "Sabihin mo yan sa lumutang na kotse ni Christopher Lao."
MY SAY ON THIS
Did Christopher Lao's eyes fail him? Or did everything that is logical escaped him when he decided to challenge the floodwater? Just asking.
Lao is the subject of ridicule primarily because of his arrogance and condescension. His act of driving through the flood (how stupid that was) could have been taken lightly by the public. But his intent to save face made him look like an arrogant fool. Let this be a lesson about the proper use of common sense and humility.
PS: Toyota did not release an amphibious variant of its Altis line. You are now informed.
